The days are getting shorter again! Brightly coloured leaves fall silently from the branches, and on our windowsills,we have hand-made chestnut dolls – summer has put aside its dreams to make way to a golden autumn.
Mornings are starting to get chilly, and our children are wearing warm woollen caps over their sun-bleached hair.
New autumn shoes have replaced sandals. The aroma of hot chocolate and plum cake fills our homes and we are all looking forward to the months ahead. And yet, we are still reluctant to leave the summer behind us, above all our children. That is why we are all spending the last dry sunny days happily outdoors.
“Preparing our gardens quickly for the fall”: that is what many of us were doing this weekend. While we were busy sweeping, clearing, cleaning and tidying up, something wonderful happened.

Instead of putting away the beach umbrella before winter, our kids took advantage of the fine weather and used the “material” they had to build a campsite for their adventures. In just a moment, they were deep in an urban jungle of their own.
They tried to spot wild animals, buried a treasure and started a fantastic expedition into new imaginary worlds.
I find it so fascinating to watch them, and I realize that everyday objects are often the best toys to play with for hours.
But no campsite is a campsite without a flag?

It took the kids just a moment to make a perfect flag, with the simple objects they had: they used a broomstick, a paper roll, a piece of material and brush, to make their very own flag, complete with a family coat of arms.

The entrance of the tent was fiercely guarded and only the chiefs decided who could enter … coming along with a bowl of hot popcorn helped of course!

They also persuaded me to get out the camp chairs that I had already put away in the cellar. It is so much easier to spot a city bear from a camp chair.
Do you think your children might enjoy building a campsite?
If so, get out your campsite material and let your children put their imagination to the test.
Enjoy watching them!

This is what we used to build our campsite:

  • beach umbrella and holder
  • bath towels, blankets, sheets, pillows, mats
  • chairs
  • decorations (garlands) or anything else you have handy

For the flag:

  • broomstick
  • paper roll, an old pillowcase or a piece of material
  • Scotch tape
  • a box of crayons, water and a brush
